Disk Space
Disk space is one of the most important considerations
when purchasing a web hosting account. The amount of disk
space included in your account will determine the number of
files and emails you will be able to store.
Disk space is usually measured in Megabytes (MB), the amount
of disk space you will need will be dependent on the type
of files you wish to host. If you have a lot of photos you
would like on your website you will need a lot more disk space
than if you only wish to have a basic website with mostly
text.
Bandwidth
Bandwidth is another more technical term for Data
Transfer (see below).
Data Transfer
Data Transfer (or Bandwidth) refers to the amount of information
you can 'serve' from your website. Every time someone visits
your website they will use up some of your allocated bandwidth,
every time you download an email you are also using up transfer.
Basically it is a measure of the interaction between your
hosting account and other people accessing your site or your
email (i.e. when you download your messages).
Sub Domains
A sub domain is much like a normal domain name except it is
created beneath a normal domain. For example if you own the
domain name mybusiness.co.nz a subdomain
might be: photos.mybusiness.co.nz. Sub domains
are a useful way of separating your website into separate
components if you wish to monitor the website statistics (i.e.
how many visitors to your site) each area has had.
Email Accounts
An email account refers to a designated email address from
which you can download and send messages. These are also known
as POP Email Accounts, they are the electronic equivalent
of a physical letter box or post office box.
Forwarding Email Accounts
A forwarding email account isn't really an email
account, it is more like a redirection service. A forwarding
account allows you to specify an email address which you wish
to have email sent to.
